613 Commandments – I don’t have the 613 OT commandments memorized; do you?

• 2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
• Matthew 5:17 “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
• Matthew 22:36-40 “³⁶ Master, which is the great commandment in the law? ³⁷ Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. ³⁸ This is the first and great commandment. ³⁹ And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ⁴⁰ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
• Matthew 5:18,19 “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. ¹⁹ Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
• Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Trusting spiritual authority wasn’t just important as a child, teen, and adult in the church, but it was a requirement. I am thankful for the Pastors and teachers that I have learned from over the years. The Holy Spirit helps me recall important and life-changing teaching from the past. Of course, the timing of the Holy Spirit is perfect. He causes a verse to become lively and offer immediate application. The spiritual foundation that I have the privilege of standing upon today is because of faithful men from the past.

However, these faithful men were just that, men, who fought the flesh and battled to seek first the kingdom of God. The lust of the flesh, eyes, and the pride of life were real and confronting. The point is this, we have a responsibility to study to shew ourselves approved. Why? God’s Word is the authority! Men attempt to convey the truths of a perfect Book about a perfect God for perfect Salvation. Yes, God knows the frailty of man; and still uses Pastors, deacons, teachers, and evangelists.

Still, the fundamentals of the Baptists are spot on, but the methods of church servitude and participation are lacking. There is a fog of exclusionary participation in many churches. That is, you’re welcome to sit in the service, have a meal, fellowship, or shake hands, but that’s about it, if you’re on the list of Baptist preferences.  It’s been said that Christians say some stupid things without verifying God’s Word. Frankly, there are a lot of parrots, in church, reciting what they have heard. However, they lack the knowledge of God’s Word in their words. We, as Christians, are required to study God’s Word and verify what is coming across the pulpit. The preferential preaching in a church will change depending on the Pastor behind the pulpit. The ‘sheep’ have a responsibility to ask the Pastor questions about what they hear. If your Pastor won’t hear you or accept responsibility for his words — may be time to change Pastors.

Consequently, there are 613 commandments in the Old Testament, and here are a few that Baptists emphasize:

• Do not commit sodomy
• Do not have intercourse with another man’s wife
• Not to swear needlessly
• Do not violate an oath or swear falsely
• Not to break a vow
• Do not covet what belongs to another
• Not to make a graven image
• Do not drink wine
• Not to cut oneself or make incisions in one’s flesh
• Do not tattoo the body
• That a man shall not wear women’s clothing
• That a woman should not wear men’s clothing
• Hallow God’s name
• Do not take away from or add to God’s Word
• Tithing
• Don’t kill
• Do not lie
• No stealing

So, how about the other 595 commandments in the OT? Why do Baptists pick and choose the legalities hovering over their church? Of course, these legalities are not consistent from church to church. Red flag! Truly, these inconsistencies are direct evidence that the preferences of men are the drivers in many of our local churches. For we know, that God’s Word is CONSISTENT, IMMUTABLE, and PERFECT.

Dear Baptist, why not tout the following as important constructs of your church?

• That the newly married husband shall (be free) for one year to rejoice with his wife
• That a bridegroom shall be exempt for a whole year from taking part in any public labor, such as military service, guarding the wall, and similar duties
• According to the Torah, divorce is accomplished simply by writing a bill of divorce, handing it to the wife, and sending her away.
• Divorce for any reason, or no reason
• Free to marry after divorce
• If a man disappears or deserts his wife or is presumed dead but there is insufficient proof of death, she cannot remarry
• Only the husband can initiate a divorce
• Do not borrow on interest
• Not to demand from a poor man repayment of his debt, when the creditor knows that he cannot pay, nor press him
• Do not cross-breed cattle of different species
• Not to sow different kinds of seed together in one field
• Do not wear garments made of wool and linen mixed together

With this in mind, Baptists tend to limit the servitude, given by God, and available to a saint, by inconsistently interpreting and applying God’s Word. Here are some examples that will either limit or eliminate your service in a Baptist church:

• Pants on a woman
• Card playing
• Contemporary Christian music
• Movies
• Not wearing a tie, gentlemen
• Having a tattoo
• Divorce
• Not voting yes with a deacon board
  • By the way, don’t be duped into believing that deacons are any more than servants. They are not an authority in the church, no matter what your constitution and by-laws say. Oh, be careful of the constitution and by-laws.
• Not wearing a dress or skirt that drags the ground for every function of the church
• What college or k-12 school you attended — public, private…Surely, if you attended a public school you can’t be used of God! (tongue in cheek) Oh, was the school associated with the right “Baptist Camp” That is a biggy in many Baptist circles
• How about this? Who you fellowship with – Which preacher’s meeting you attended or didn’t attend – Do you fellowship with someone that the Pastor doesn’t fellowship with — BAPTISTS HAVE THIS “THING” CALLED SECONDARY SEPARATION.

It’s been said that Christians say some stupid things without verifying God’s Word.

Does lukewarm and spew ring a bell? Have you ever wondered why Christians get fed up with Baptists and their antics? Is your church stagnant? Have long-tenured and faithful members quit, or moved to another denomination? Are you trying to please the Pastor or Christ? Your hope better be built on nothing less than Jesus’ Blood and Righteousness. You will never live up to the ever-changing list of pet sins in your church. Why? because that list will change depending on the next pastor you get, or the ungodly ruling of a deacon board. Differing Baptists

Summary: Who are we serving? God or man? Are we studying God’s Word, and ensuring it matches the words flowing from the pulpit? Church, Christian; this area of preferences in the church is a factor that weakens, discourages, and excludes Godly men and women from service. The worst part is that most of the disqualifying issues touted by the church cannot be supported by God’s Word.

One of these days we will stand before the Great Judge, Jesus. Will we blame our lack of service on the fear of man? Will we decide not to do what God has laid upon our hearts because of man’s confusion?
