Generations

Generations, generations, generations — Who’s sick of hearing about generations and the incessant attempt to make unfruitful comparisons and contrasts?
Generation defined: all the people of about the same age within a society or within a particular family or the usual period of time from a person’s birth to the birth of his or her children  Cambridge
  • 2000-: New Silent Generation or Generation Z.
  • 1980 to 2000: Millennials or Generation Y.
  • 1965 to 1979: Thirteeners or Generation X.
  • 1946 to 1964: Baby Boomers.
  • 1925 to 1945: the Silent Generation.
  • 1900 to 1924: the G.I. Generation.

From a strictly Biblical perspective:

Over 200 times, the word generation is referred to in the KJV. Generation referred to history, family, age, race, manner of life, posterity, chosen people, and a reckoned time. Bible Study Tools

That is to say, God in His infinite and merciful wisdom prepared, provided, purposed, permitted, and protected His Word for all generations. The KJV, which at 408 years old, is comprised of nearly 1,000 years of God’s literary handiwork written by 1 AUTHOR and 40 transcribers.

The Problem

Over the past 10 years or so, churches have fallen prey to the paradigm shift toward “millennial obsessiveness disorder.” How has the brain-washing imposed upon Christians and Churches, as it relates to taking Jesus to the lost world, affected the church’s approach to music, worship, activities, and relationships?

Simply put, many churches plan to fail by creating a tainted plan of worship. The Word of God hasn’t been surprised by the onset of generational competition in our country. However, it seems many churches have been duped into believing that God’s Word isn’t powerful enough to cut through the generations.

FACT: Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Furthermore, when you participate in your church service, whether it be for music, worship, preaching, teaching, or activities — The power is not in you! You don’t have the ability for Spiritual thought. There will be no results from a Biblical presentation outside the Power of God.

Likewise, whether 6,000 years ago in the Garden of Eden, The Dark Ages, Renaissance, Age of Enlightenment, The Revolution, Modern, and Contemporary Age, or the time ahead of us before Jesus returns — God’s Word is sufficient!

Therefore, it isn’t a necessity to present the promises of God’s Word differently because of a generational/ societal focus. If a generational approach is important to you, focus on the fact that a generation of vipers exists and in need of Christ.

Summary

In conclusion, John 3:16 and the Romans Road are relevant today just as in the past, no matter the generational catalog.  Above all, God’s Word provides the power, not your meager attempts to draw in a generation-fancied group of people. Therefore, open your mouth and share God’s Word! Rest assured, it will do the work in the youngest heart, as well as the oldest heart in your congregation.

Jeremiah 23:29 “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”

Not original to me, but true: “God is not going to rewrite the Bible for your generation. Stop trying to change Scripture when It’s written to Change You!

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
